Itinerary

  1. Day
    1
Potteries Museum and Art Gallery with Dan Cruickshank
    Stoke on Trent, United Kingdom

Depart by coach from our designated pick-up points and head north, stopping en-route at our first visit - the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery at Stoke on Trent. Highlights of the gallery include twentieth century British painting and internationally significant prints and local views. Particular strengths are the 18th-century earthenware and stoneware as well as 19th-century porcelains and bone china. In a specially-adapted section of the museum you can also view a large number of items from the Staffordshire Hoard, that remarkable treasure trove of Anglo-Saxon gold and silver which was discovered by an amateur metal detector in south Staffordshire in 2009 and was later valued at over £3,000,000.

You'll be joined here by art historian Dan Cruikshank, who will accompany you for the first three days of the tour. Later, continue to your comfortable hotel for dinner.

  2. Day
    2
Lady Lever Art Gallery and Tate Liverpool with Dan
    Liverpool, United Kingdom

Following breakfast this morning you'll travel to Port Sunlight in the Wirral, where you'll visit the Lady Lever Art Gallery. The industrialist and philanthropist Lord Leverhulme began collecting art in the late 19th century to use as advertising for the popular Sunlight Soap brand that helped to create his fortune. As he grew richer his collections began to expand, and as well as British art he was also fascinated by Chinese art, Roman sculpture and Greek vases. The Gallery is famous for its Pre-Raphaelite paintings, including Bubbles by Sir John Everett Millais and William Holman Hunt's The Scapegoat.

This afternoon, take the Ferry Across the Mersey, pausing to view the bronze statue of The Beatles as you take the short walk to Tate Liverpool, which is the home of the National Collection of Modern Art in the North of England and is the largest gallery of modern and contemporary art outside London. It is housed in a beautifully converted warehouse, part of the impressive Albert Dock complex which has brought new life to Liverpool.

You will also have a chance to view Anthony Gormley's 'Another Place' sculpture on Crosby Beach, Liverpool, before returning to the hotel. This evening, your celebrity guest Dan Cruikshank will give an illustrated talk after dinner.

    Meals - Breakfast, Dinner
  3. Day
    3
    Tatton Park and Chester Cathedral
    Chester, United Kingdom

This morning after breakfast travel into Cheshire for a visit to the House and Gardens at Tatton Park. The estate features a large 50-acre garden within a larger estate, with many interesting features and plants. These include a walled kitchen garden, a Japanese garden and a conservatory which was designed by Joseph Paxton, designer of the Crystal Palace. The House features one of the National Trust's finest libraries and an outstanding collection of Gillow's of Lancaster furniture.

This afternoon, visit Chester Cathedral on a guided tour with an opportunity to marvel at the 14th-century carved choir stalls, stained glass and cloisters. Following the tour, continue to Chester Roman Gardens, constructed in 1949 to display the building fragments from the Roman legionary fortress of Deva. Most of the Roman building fragments now on display in the gardens were unearthed at the end of the nineteenth century during excavations in Chester. Later, you'll head back to the hotel for dinner.

    Meals - Breakfast, Dinner
  4. Day
    4
    Arley Hall and return home
    Arley Hall, United Kingdom

This morning after breakfast, check out of the hotel and depart for your final visit, the gardens of Arley Hall. A pair of herbaceous borders was laid out here in 1846 and they survive to this day, beautifully maintained - one of the great garden sights of England. There are also old walled gardens with good mixed borders and a simple terraced walk above a ha-ha. Still in private hands, Arley Hall preserves the atmosphere of a garden kept for its own delight.

Following this visit, you'll head for home, and expect to return to your original departure points mid-late evening.
