Itinerary

  1. Day
    1
    Arrive in Arles
    Arles, France

Today you'll arrive at the Marseille Airport, where you will be greeted by a Uniworld representative and transferred to the S.S. Catherine, your luxurious home from home for the next few days.

  2. Day
    2
    Arles
    Arles, France

Arles is a quintessential, sun-drenched Provençal town, and you'll get to explore it today and discover its unique charms.

Known for its remarkable Roman ruins, Arles so inspired Van Gogh that he painted around 200 paintings while staying here.

The town has existed since the sixth century BC, when the ancient Greeks founded it, naming it Theline. It was here that the Romans built their first bridge across the Rhône River, creating a vital overland route between Italy and Spain.

  3. Day
    3
    Avignon
    Avignon, France

Today's stop is the fascinating walled city of Avignon, one of the most intriguing towns in southern France, with a host of historic gems to explore.

You'll see the fortress residence of rebellious popes who broke from Rome and once lived and ruled here. The Palace of the Popes is one of the largest and most important mediaeval Gothic buildings in Europe and holds so much history within its walls.

You'll also get the chance to visit the city's 2,000-year-old Roman aqueduct before returning to the ship for a special Captain's Welcome Reception and Dinner in the elegant dining room.

  4. Day
    4
    Viviers
    Viviers, France

Another enchanting location awaits you today - this time the lovely village of Viviers, where time seems to have come to a standstill centuries ago.

Viviers has a long and storied past that dates back more than 1,600 years and a splendid architectural heritage to match.

At one point, Viviers was divided along religious lines-the clergy lived in the upper part of the town, the laity in the lower part. Your tour of the town will take you through both parts, as you begin at the crest and make your way to the riverbank.

  5. Day
    5
    Tain-l’hermitage
    Tain-l'Hermitage, France

The perfect day for lovers of fine wine, who'll feel right at home in the twin villages of Tournon and Tain-l'Hermitage.

Tournon may be a small town, but it has a stirring history. A castle was raised on the hilltop in the 10th century to protect the region, and new fortifications were added over the centuries, including two 'new' towers built to defend against Protestant attacks in the 16th century.

On a guided tour, you'll see the handsome houses constructed by wealthy merchants and garrison officers when you walk through the Rue de Doux area, and you'll pass the 14th-century church and the oldest secondary school in France.

  6. Day
    6
    Lyon
    Lyon, France

Ancient Lyon is today's port of call. A city of tantalising contrasts, from Roman roots to stunning modern architecture and plenty of Renaissance flair in between, there's so much to see and do in Lyon.

Perhaps you'll take to the city's bike paths to the silk weavers' secret passageways, or have lunch on your own at one of the many traditional Bouchons Lyonnais, traditional Lyonnaise eateries which serve up hearty dishes like coq-au-vin, duck pâté and roast pork.

In the evening, you'll return to the ship, where a special Captain's Farewell Reception and Dinner will be prepared for you.

  7. Day
    7
    Mâcon
    Mâcon, France

Today you'll sail into Burgundy, where the pace of life is decidedly relaxed, and where endless rows of grapes hang heavy in the rolling vineyards.

The capital of the region's wine trade, Beaune is renowned for its history, beauty, and highly prized wine, as well as its mediaeval-era hospital.

  8. Day
    8
    Lyon
    Lyon, France

This morning you'll disembark the ship in Lyon as your cruise comes to an end, and transfer to the airport for your flight home. If you're not quite ready to go home, you can continue your adventure with an optional extension to Paris.
