This will be a wonderful journey of discovery in the heart of ‘malt whisky country’, at what should be a perfect time of the year in Scotland. I am looking forward to sharing my expertise in assessing whisky - and my stories - with you.

Taste Scotland’s whiskies on a four-day trip to Aviemore

Dedicate four days to learning about excellent Scotch whisky on a memorable trip to the Highlands this September.
From your base at the four-star MacDonald Highlands Hotel in Aviemore, you'll visit three renowned distilleries for tours and tastings, including Blair Athol Distillery, The Glenlivet, and Strathisla Distillery. At each, you'll have the chance to meet the distillers, learn the history of Scotch whisky, and see first-hand how they're carefully created. You'll taste the results, comparing different malts and appreciating the complexities.
You'll be joined byexpert Charles MacLean, an established authority on Scottish whisky, for a masterclass and tasting at the hotel. You'll compare and contrast whiskies from distinct Scottish regions: the Highlands, Lowlands, West Highlands and Islay.
Visits to distilleries are balanced with other experiences in Scotland, with two scenic railway journeys - including a trip aboard the Strathspey Railway to a village used as a location on the television series Monarch of the Glen.
A visit to the beautiful Ballindalloch Castle and Gardens offers the opportunity to learn about the Macpherson-Grant family, who has lived there since the 16th century. Take time to wander the beautiful gardens and admire the autumn roses.
Breakfasts and dinners are included at the hotel, where you'll have a chance to meet others on the tour and enjoy a wee dram or two together. The hotel has its own whisky bar, the Laggan Bar, where you can order a single malt and find a cosy spot around the log fire to enjoy it.

Day1Blair Athol DistilleryAviemore, United Kingdom
Your trip begins with a flight from London Stansted to Edinburgh, where you'll be met by your tour manager and travel north into Highland Perthshire. You'll visit the Blair Athol Distillery for your first look at how a Scottish distillery operates and pause to savour a tutored tasting of three exceptional whiskies.
After the tour, you'll check into your four-star hotel, the MacDonald Highlands Hotel, your base for the next three nights. Tonight, you'll enjoy a relaxed dinner with your group at the hotel.

Day2Strathspey Railway, Ballindalloch Castle, and The GlenlivetBoat of Garten, United Kingdom
After breakfast, you'll board the maroon-liveried coaches of the Strathspey Railway. Reminiscent of train travel in the 1950s and 60s, the carriages are hauled by a steam locomotive, crossing heather-covered moorland with views of the Cairngorm Mountains. The train stops at Boat of Garten, which you may recognise from Monarch of the Glen when it was used as the fictional village of Glenbogle in the popular television drama.
A coach takes you onwards to Ballindalloch Castle and Garden. Home of the Macpherson-Grants since 1546, it's a magnificent place to explore with particularly splendid gardens.
The final visit of the day is to The Glenlivet, one of the great names of Speyside whisky. Here, you'll learn how they established the first licensed distillery and defended it from smugglers. You'll also taste three single malts - 12, 15, and 18 years old.
Dinner is served back at the hotel in the evening.
-
Day3Heritage railway, Strathisla Distillery, whisky tasting with Charles MacLeanKeith, United Kingdom
Your day begins with another railway journey - this time aboard the heritage railway line from Dufftown to Keith. On arrival at Keith, you'll visit the nearby Strathisla Distillery, the oldest operating distillery in the highlands and home of Chivas Regal. You'll taste four whiskies here before returning to the hotel.
Charles MacLean joins you at the hotel to host a whisky-tasting experience before dinner. You'll taste four whiskies representing different regional styles, including Lowland, Highland, West Highland, and Islay.
-
Day4House of BruarEdinburgh, United Kingdom
