One of the most bitterly contested battles of World War I, commemorate the 110th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme on this no-fly tour
There are few battlefields as evocative of the attritional
nature of the Great War as the Somme. It was across this rolling
Picardy landscape that the British Expeditionary Force locked horns
with the German Army between July and November 1916 in a campaign
whose shadow remains cast over us to this day.
Now, some 110 years on, this tour will focus on the various
phases of the battle whilst incorporating the official services of
commemoration that will take place across the anniversary.
From the planning and logistical efforts leading up to the
battle, to its traumatic, sun scorched opening day on July 1st,
this tour will also consider the subsequent assaults throughout the
summer to its muddy culmination in November alongside the tactical
and technical innovations this period brought.
The tour will be led by military historian and author Clive
Harris who has been writing about, lecturing on and visiting the
Somme Battlefields for 40 years. Clive will deliver a talk on your
first evening, and offer expert insights throughout the tour.
You'll be staying at a hotel in central Amiens, in the heart of
Picardy - an ideal location for exploring the Circuit of
Remembrance, with its historic World War I sites, landmarks and
memorials.
The tour not only offers a detailed study of the Somme battle
from all sides of the wire but will consider its context within the
Great War and its continuing legacy today.
Personal visits are positively encouraged and will be
incorporated into the itinerary.
"I look forward to sharing the once tortured landscape
of the Somme battlefield with you, but most importantly, the
stories of those who were there. The Somme, above almost any other
battle of the Great War has come to symbolise the sacrifices of a
generation. This tour attempts to contextualise their experience,
alongside the legacy of their memoirs 110 years on."
