Stay in a four-star hotel near Arundel, a superb base from which to explore this wine-producing region

English wines have enjoyed a burgeoning reputation for their quality and sophistication in recent years, not least those created in the fertile countryside and downlands of Sussex. This southern English county is home to many exemplary vineyards and wineries that provide excellent hospitality alongside their award-winning wines.

Extend your English wine knowledge and spend four days on vineyard tours in early September 2023. You'll visit the Wiston Estate, Ridgeview Estate, Artelium, Ashling Park, and Tinwood Estate, tasting different still and sparkling wines and even a local gin.

A special appearance by Susy Atkins, drinks columnist and wine expert, brings an extra level of impartial insight to the tour, sharing her knowledge of the wonderful world of wine and her enthusiasm for home-grown varieties. Susy will join you on the Ridgeview Estate, Artelium, and Ashling Park tours.

While wine tasting is the primary focus, a visit to Arundel Castle complements this Sussex exploration, allowing you to discover the area's history and enjoy the views across the glorious South Downs. There's also the opportunity to get to know the beautiful, storybook-style town of Arundel on an evening walking tour.

Avisford Park, a Georgian manor house hotel between Chichester and Arundel, provides a central base for your explorations. Dinner is included each night, and Susy will join you on two of the three evenings, providing the perfect opportunity to discuss English wine further. Leisurely breakfasts are also included, and you'll have access to the hotel's leisure facilities during your stay.

Perfect for wine connoisseurs and novices alike, this is four days well spent for anyone looking to gain a deep understanding of English viticulture.

Itinerary

  1. Day
    1
    Wiston Estate
    Pulborough, United Kingdom

The tour starts with a visit to family-owned Wiston Estate, set in an ancient chalk downland landscape. This award-winning vineyard produces a range of English sparkling wines in a range of styles using traditional methods. Their wines are consistently championed as the best examples of their type in the UK.

You'll be taken through the story of the estate and learn about the vineyards which surround the winery and restaurant. You'll see the traditional Champagne coquard press, tank and barrel halls and finish up with a tutored tasting of a selection of Wiston wines in the new tasting room.

Following the visit, a transfer will take you to Avisford Park to check in, around 20 minutes away. Dinner is served at the hotel in the evening.

    Meals - Dinner
  2. Day
    2
    Ridgeview Estate and Artelium
    Ditchling, United Kingdom

After breakfast this morning, you'll depart for the Ridgeview Estate, where Susy Atkins will join the tour. This vineyard was one of the first wineries in England to focus solely on the production of sparkling wines from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grape varieties. With meticulous attention to detail and expertise in cool climate viticulture, they produce fruit of excellent ripeness and wonderful natural acidity that's ideal for sparkling wine. Their wines have been selected for State Dinners at Buckingham Palace, served to Barack Obama, and the Bloomsbury NV was the official wine of the late Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

You'll take a tour of the vineyard and winery, followed by a tasting of Ridgeway sparkling wines in a dedicated tasting room overlooking the picturesque South Downs. A light lunch in the al fresco Rows & Vine restaurant follows, which overlooks the Chardonnay vineyard.

After lunch, you'll travel a couple of miles to Artelium, which produces award-winning still and sparkling wines. The estate has two very different soil profiles: the east side is a heavy clay loam, while the west side has shallow topsoil over pure chalk. These different growing conditions allow them to produce wines with distinctly different qualities and flavours. After a guided walk through the vineyards with one of the knowledgeable team, you'll taste three wines.

Back at the hotel, dinner is included. Susy Atkins will host a Q&A session discussing wine in general.

    Meals - Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  3. Day
    3
    Ashling Park and Arundel Castle
    Arundel, United Kingdom

After breakfast, you'll head west to Ashling Park. You'll hear about the passion and care that's taken to grow the grapes throughout the year and the work involved in producing trophy-winning wines.

You'll taste two sparkling wines and a still wine, followed by a gin distilled from Pinot Noir grapes grown on the estate. The tastings are served alongside a platter of local cheeses, breads, olives, and pickles to complement the wine. Susy Atkins departs after your visit to Ashling Park.

This afternoon, you'll visit Arundel Castle and Gardens. Set high on a hill, its aspect gifts it with spectacular views across South Downs and the River Arun. It has been home to the Dukes of Norfolk and their ancestors since its founding in the 11th century.

Dinner is served back at the hotel. Afterwards, you can head back to Arundel for a walking tour of the town.

    Meals - Breakfast, Dinner
  4. Day
    4
    Tinwood Estate
    Chichester, United Kingdom

This morning, after a leisurely breakfast, you'll check out of Avisford Park and depart for the Tinwood Estate, the final vineyard visit. Since its first planting in 2007, Tinwood has established a reputation for producing the very finest English sparkling wines. This includes the Estate Brut, the Blanc de Blancs and an exquisite Rosé. You'll tour the estate, hear from the growers, and taste three glasses of sparkling wine.
