Discover the atmospheric streets of Lucca, one of Tuscany's best-preserved medieval cities, before visiting the magnificent Villa Torrigiani, famed for its lavish Baroque gardens, ornamental ponds, secret pathways and dramatic façade.

Journey by boat along the rugged coastline of the Cinque Terre, where colourful fishing villages cling to steep cliffs above the sparkling Ligurian Sea, and soak up the glamour of Portofino, with its pastel harbourfront, elegant boutiques and sweeping coastal views. Here, visit a stunning Italian Riviera garden filled with exotic Mediterranean planting, terraces and breathtaking sea panoramas.

You'll also travel into the Tuscan Hills. Discover the magnificent Villa Reale di Marlia, home to beautifully landscaped parkland, ornate fountains, formal gardens, woodland walks and the remarkable open-air Green Theatre. While in this stunning location, indulge in a traditional Tuscan wine tasting and lunch - a great way to end a beautiful journey through one of Italy's most picturesque regions.

Alan Mason is one of Europe's top garden designers. A founder member of the Professional Gardeners' Guild, he became Britain's youngest head gardener when he took charge of the French-style gardens at Bramham Park in Yorkshire.

He has created and restored many gardens throughout Europe including Manoir du Hilguy and Harlaxton Manor. The garden that Alan made in France at Manoir, Port de Roche was generally considered to be amongst the top private gardens in France.

He presented TV gardening programmes for 15 years, including his own series, Gardens without Borders, which explored the gardens of Europe on Channel 4. He also presented on Le Manoir, the making of his garden in France.

    Lucca
    Lucca, Italy

    After breakfast at the hotel this morning, travel by coach to historic Lucca, one of the oldest cities in Tuscany. Soak up the atmosphere in one of the town squares over coffee before a guided walk in the elegant Old Town with its ancient city walls, maze of narrow cobbled streets, churches and Lucca Cathedral. Then enjoy free time to explore with lunch at leisure, or choose an optional tour of the Botanic Garden with your guide. This afternoon, drive out of Lucca to tour Villa Torrigiani. Dinner is served in the hotel restaurant this evening.

    Cinque Terre
    Cinque Terre, Italy

    After breakfast at the hotel this morning, travel by coach to La Spezia and join a boat trip to view the colourful world of the Cinque Terre (the "Five Lands"). These quaint and incredibly scenic fishing villages can only be visited by train and boat due to their location on the rugged coastline. Embark at pretty Porto Venere for coffee en route to Monterosso, the largest of the five Cinque Terre villages, with views of two other picturesque Cinque Terre villages that slope down to meet the sea en route. On arrival at Monterosso, explore the village with your guide or at leisure and discover the array of cafes and restaurants to enjoy lunch (not included; but excellent seafood options). Your return to Viareggio is by train and coach. Dinner is served in the hotel restaurant this evening.

    Portofino
    Portofino, Italy

    After breakfast at the hotel this morning, travel by coach to Rapallo and then transfer to private cars for the journey to the chic and famous resort of Portofino. There are many cafes and restaurants with a variety of offerings where you can purchase lunch (not included) and soak up the magnificent views and atmosphere. Stroll in the narrow streets, lined with colourful shops from those selling traditional wares and souvenirs to those selling high-end fashion and goods. Then rejoin the private cars for a transfer to a beautiful garden in a stunning setting, overlooking the Italian Riviera. Return to Rapallo by private transfer or boat and then by coach to Viareggio. Dinner is served in the hotel restaurant this evening.

    After breakfast at the hotel this morning, drive to the Tuscan Hills to visit the gardens, villa, museum and clock house of Villa Reale di Marlia followed by lunch and wine tasting included at Frattoria Il Poggi in the Tuscan Hills. Your final night's dinner is served in the hotel restaurant.

    After breakfast at the hotel this morning, check out (luggage can be stored safely by the hotel concierge).
